[One Guy on Stage]
Guy Williams is a household name that most Kiwis recognise by now, particularly being of Jono and Ben fame.
His comedy career spanning almost a decade has been nothing short of impressive, making him a regular at the NZ Comedy International Festival in Auckland and Wellington.
Hence expectations were high at opening night. But for some reason we can’t put our finger on, the energy of the show was wrong from the outset. And unfortunately the 2012 Billy T awardee had to push shit up hill for the rest of the evening.
His delivery was absolutely fine but the entire performance was devoid of the electric charge needed to ignite the audience into fits of laughter.
It felt like we were watching a train wreck which no one could avert. We felt very sorry for Williams but things just did not going his way tonight.
Let’s hope that a relaxed Saturday audience is more forgiving that the after work Friday crowd that came with a “show me what you’ve got attitude”.
Our sincere hope is that tonight will be a corker, totally negating this review.
Don’t get us wrong, he’s a likeable chap. His jokes are good and his observations are astute. But in this show a lack of momentum left periods of mirth, without inflicting the killer hilarity that makes for great stand-up.
Not bad, but not amazing. I’m pretty sure he knows he can do better.
Guy Williams plays Q until 19 May.
