REVIEW: LOL Models: Angella Dravid and Melanie Bracewell (NZ International Comedy Festival)

Review by Tim George

ANGELLA DRAVID & MELANIE BRACEWELL

[On a LOL]

If you like jokes about ending monotonous conversations at parties, dating short men, and future scenarios in which gender fluidity is a fashion choice, you’ll get a lot out mileage out of this.

Melanie Bracewell and Angella Dravid are your classic double act. One tall and loud, one short and quiet. While Bracewell regales you with stories of childhood trauma and her extremely subtle flirting technique, Dravid talks about ranking dick picks. And toe jobs.

Combining individual stand up bits with sketch and musical collaborations, LOL Models is pleasingly ragged around the edges.
The comics frame the show as their older selves looking back on their work in 2016 from some deranged, Trumpified future in which rents are 10k a month and the Donald has cured cancer.
There is a calculated unease to their dynamic which is delightfully awkward. This allows for some in-the-moment gems which rank among the biggest laughs of the night — especially during the ‘transitions’ between 2016 and the future, as the pair stumble around in near darkness hurriedly trying to change costumes.
Running just under an hour, LOL Models is a nifty little showcase for two emerging comic talents. Check it out.
Lol Models plays as part of the NZ International Comedy Festival 2016 at the Basement until 30 April. Details see Comedy Festival
